Art of Bronze is proud to offer “Young Indian Man” bronze statue signed by Charles Russell. Charles Russell originally sculpted the bronze portrait medallion in 1898. It was part of a set called “Young Man” and “Old Man,” depicting a Native American brave in the stages of his life. Additional bronze medallions were created and sold at Abercrombie & Fitch from the 1920s to the 1960s. It is signed on the back “CM Russell with skull and Roman Bronze Works.” The medallion comes with a hole for mounting it on a wall.
This sculpture makes a GREAT holiday gift idea for that American West lover, or a perfect addition to your own collection!
Charles Marion Russell (1864 – 1926), also known as C. M. Russell and “Kid” Russell, was an American artist of the American Old West. He created more than 2,000 paintings of cowboys, Native Americans, and landscapes set in the western United States and Alberta, Canada, in addition to bronze sculptures. Known as the “cowboy artist,” he was also a storyteller and author. He became an advocate for Native Americans in the west, supporting the bid by landless Ojibwa to have a reservation established for them in Montana. In 1916, Congress passed legislation to create the Rocky Boy Reservation (named after Ahsiniiwin, the chief of the Ojibwa band, who had died a few months earlier).
In 1955, Russell was inducted into the Hall of Great Westerners of the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Russell collections can also be found at the Montana Historical Society in Helena, the Buffalo Bill Center of the West in Cody, Wyoming, and the Amon Carter Museum of American Art in Fort Worth, Texas. His 1912 mural “Lewis & Clark Meeting Indians at Ross’ Hole” hangs in the House Chambers of the Montana Capitol in Helena.
