William Frederick Cody (February 26, 1846 – January 10, 1917), known as Buffalo Bill, was an American soldier, bison hunter, and showman.
At the tender age of eleven, Cody embarked on a journey far from home, herding cattle and working as a wagon train driver across the vast expanse of the Great Plains. His adventures led him into fur trapping, gold mining, and eventually, to the trails of the early Pony Express in 1860.
Following the Civil War, Cody’s expertise as a scout for the Army earned him the moniker “Buffalo Bill” for his prowess in hunting and supplying meat to railroad workers. While his exploits garnered local recognition, it was an encounter with Ned Buntline, a dime novelist, that propelled Cody into the realm of legend.
Buntline’s embellished tales transformed Cody’s life into larger-than-life stories, catapulting him to fame. In 1883, Cody capitalized on his newfound celebrity by founding Buffalo Bill’s Wild West, a spectacle that toured across the United States and, from 1887 onward, captivated audiences in Europe.
