In 1868, Bloody Knife enlisted as a scout in the U.S. Army and was assigned to the 7th Cavalry. Bloody Knife was an Arikara scout and quickly became George Armstrong Custer’s favorite scout. He spent many years as a scout for Custer and the 7th calvary being on the Yellowstone, Black Hills and the Big Horn expeditions. He was with Major Reno’s troops at the Little Big Horn battle and was killed by a bullet to the head shortly after the fight started.
