The Art Nouveau movement, in terms of dates, covers the period 1890-1910 approximately, or late 19th century to pre-First World War.  Art Nouveau celebrates elegant curves and organic patterns inspired from the flowing vines and flowers of nature.  One major objective of Art Nouveau was to break down the traditional distinction between fine arts (i.e. painting and sculpture) and applied arts.

The Art Deco Movement encompasses the 1920s and 30’s, or the period between the wars.  With the beginning of the First World War in 1914, Art Nouveau was largely exhausted.  Beginning in the 1920’s, the Art Deco Movement became the dominant architectural and decorative style in Europe and the United States.   The Art Deco Movement flourished until the beginning of World War II.  Art Deco reflected the glamorization of the industrial revolution.  Art Deco consists of sharp angles, streamlined and geometric designs.  During its heyday, it represented luxury, exuberance, and “Hollywood-Style” glamor.
